Industrial air quality

Industrial air quality describes the concentration of particulates, volatile organic compounds and other contaminants in the air of a working industrial space.

Why it matters

Air quality is a chronic exposure problem rather than an acute one, which makes it easy to ignore - there is no moment at which it becomes obviously urgent. It is also a leading indicator: a process producing more contaminant than usual is a process that has changed.

How it works

General-purpose sensing elements respond to a broad class of compounds and produce a relative index rather than a per-compound measurement. Specific compounds require specific instruments.

Example

A rising VOC index in a mixing area indicating either a ventilation failure or a change in what is being mixed.

In Alfa HazardX

The air-quality channel covers general contaminants and chemical vapour as a relative index.
