Why it matters
A fixed omnidirectional sensor reports a scalar with no directional content. Conventional practice buys spatial resolution by installing more sensors, which turns a directional-sensing problem into a cabling and capital problem. A sweep buys it with one mechanical degree of freedom instead.
How it works
The platform commands the rotating base to each heading in turn and waits for the base to confirm physical arrival before the sensing node samples, never on an assumed settling delay. The stop recording the strongest response is the peak sector, and its heading is the bearing.
Example
Six stops at sixty-degree intervals, thirty to sixty seconds end to end. A sharp single-direction peak means a confident bearing; a broad, flat sweep reports a direction with low confidence rather than discarding the result silently.
In Alfa HazardX
Triggered automatically on behavioural recognition, but equally operable from an absolute-limit crossing, an operator command, or a schedule.
